‘Farida Zaman, For the Love of Country’ by Martin Bradley is a biography and appreciation of the paintings of Dr Farida Zaman.
Farida Zaman, painter and professor at the Faculty of Fine Arts, University of Dhaka, has an amazing ability to evoke the memories of her rural village by the mighty river Meghna where the households resonated with the rhythm of work. The recurrent motifs of fish, fishing lines, cat, and flowers suggest a life lived at the margin where want and hardship were muted by the spectacle of nature. Painted from lived experience, her depiction of the village (and sometimes a carefree child named Sufia) through vibrant colours and rich texture, complemented by a rhythmic arrangement of lines is nothing but magical.
Bradley’s appreciation of Farida Zaman’s life and art in the book called ‘Farida Zaman, For the Love of Country’ turns out to be a pleasure-read for the lovers of paintings and arts as a whole.
